List Notes: Data is top 5 countries with the highest Programme for the OECD's International Student Assessment or PISA scores among 15-year-old students in schools across the globe in member and non-member countries for the year 2012. Annualised change is the average annual change in PISA score points from a country’s/economy’s earliest participation in PISA to PISA 2012.

Special note: China is not uniquely listed as a country in the PISA rankings unlike other nations that are judged on the basis of their country-wide performances. Instead, China only shares Shanghai’s score with PISA. (Hong Kong, a Special Autonomous Region of China, sends its own data.). This fact has caused some debate among experts that in China's case the data does not represent a sample of the country as a whole and only represents data based on an elite sample.
