- According to the report "Abortion Incidence and Service Availability In the United States, 2011.", an estimated 30% of U.S. women will have an abortion by age 45,1 and abortion incidence is one indicator of unintended pregnancy. In 2008, 51% of pregnancies were unintended, and 40% of these ended in abortion. (a.)
- 41% of women obtaining abortions are white non-Hispanic, 32% are black non-Hispanic, 20% are Hispanic and 7% are of other racial backgrounds. (b.)
- According to the Guttmacher Institute, abortion is one of the safest surgical procedures for women in the United States. Fewer than 0.5% of women obtaining abortions experience a complication, and the risk of death associated with abortion is about one-tenth that associated with childbirth. (b.)
- In 2011, 1.06 million abortions were performed in the United States, down 13% from 1.21 million in 2008. From 1973 through 2011, nearly 53 million legal abortions occurred in the U.S. (b.)
